Take a look at one of Golden Gate National Recreation Area's hidden gems located in the Marin Headlands, Nike Missile Site SF88. During the tense years of the Cold War, from 1953 to 1979, the United States Army built and operated close to 300 Nike missile sites in the United States. These sites were designed to be the last line of defense against H-Bomb carrying Soviet bombers that had eluded t...

Only two falcon chicks are visible in the nest. The parents provided a food delivery and one of the chicks is enjoying it's meal. The foot of the prey item indicates it could be a band-tailed pigeon, a native pigeon to California.

And then there were two...the falcon chicks are leaving the eyrie (cliff nest). With only two remaining in camera view, the third and fourth have fledged and are learning to fly around Alcatraz. The parents will continue to feed and diligently guard their offspring as they become more confident in flying and hunting. Eventually, they'll disperse from the island and establish their own territories.

Our falcon chicks have expanded their worldview and like to hang out outside of the eyrie (cliff nest). Three chicks are in view, with the fourth out of view. They spend their time "loafing" between meals.

The four peregrine chicks are nearing the point of fledging! This is when a chick is about to "branch out" and leave the nest in flight. Also a good view of the eyrie (nest cave) of the falcons as we try to find all the chicks.

They grow up so fast! Our peregrine squad screams for their parents to feed them while running around and exploring the floor of the eyrie for scraps of food. One chick tests out it's wings, giving some big flaps!

Is it Falcon Fridays yet? Everyone needs a good nap, especially a busy mom of four! Lawrencium takes some shut-eye with her chicks in the nest. Growing takes a lot of energy too, so the chicks also need a good amount of nap time in between feedings.

The peregrine chicks are becoming more inquisitive of their nest surroundings, picking-up sticks and feathers, moving around...also, preening! Preening is an important behavior that's ingrained in all birds. Preening, much like when we wash and brush our hair, cleans and "straightens out" the feathers. Feathers are composed of a stiff middle shaft (rachis) where the feather filaments (vane) are...

At just a few days old, the peregrine chicks are being fed by Lawrencium (banded CalFalcon female). Peregrine falcons hunt other small to medium sized birds for food. So far, we've seen lots of pigeons (Columba livia) make their way into the nest and into the mouths of the hungry chicks.

    I'm from Florida, but I was there with a rental car and I was on reconnaissance mission and was looking to cross the Golden Gate Bridge when I came across a turn that would take me down, below the bridge and where this Fort' is. 😮 The parking lot for the Fort' is directly on the water where the 'Bridge crosses over the 'Bay. 🤔 No one was in the 'lot, so I parked right in front of the Fort' and in a spot against the low sea wall. 🙂 About 40 yds. out was the massive bridge support, anchored in a solid, cement island, which I could see over and across the channel and to the Marin side of the 'bridge. 😮 The next thing I saw really surprised me because I'm surfer, and because at this point and because this is all well inside the 'Inlet and entering San Francisco bay, is that a head-high set rolled in, wrapped around the cement 'bridge support, came straight at me and the sea wall, and broke! 🤫 A beautiful, glassy, overhead, wall; it was low tide, and had I a 'board I could have paddled out a caught 2 hours of delicious peak, all by myself!☆¡ 😅 Of course, I wasn't prepared for a surf, but that accidental discovery made my whole trip; I'll never forget it. Just me, an empty parking lot, the Fort' behind me, and solid, overhead lefts peeling across and under the bridge in front of me!☆¡ 😉

    Real nice video until the end with your woke comments about "domestic enemies" and demonazation of Jan 6. It was a riot, so to be fair you must include pictures of the summer of love with BLM and Antifi when you talk about " domestic terror " ...stick to the facts. we don't need the park service making any political comentary.

    Extremely foolish to think you’re going to get in the way of the US Government and their pocket. To call this an occupation is hilarious. The feds said “Ok. Enough, now back to the reservation, you’re getting in the way of our business and you’re gonna either get killed or leave” And that’s exactly what happened. The Indians are a dominated people. It’s just the way it is. I have reverence for the early Clovis warriors, but todays Indians always play the victim card. They get away with so much it’s insane. Especially in California. But this Alcatraz thing. If anything is to be learned its this: you stand no chance against US Government territory

    Osiyo.“Our conversation with the Federal Gov. to Free Native American Political Prisoner Leonard Peltier who’s been falsely imprisoned going on half a century and to honor the Indian Treaties (pre-constitutional law) forming the basis of our great nation was almost entirely redacted on national TV shortly before the insurrection because it demanded that the then President also relinquish the nuclear codes which has never been done. Oct. 2020 I spoke with at least around a dozen federal agents including the FBI and even the US Navy. Trump says before being elected, “We have nuclear weapons so why can’t we use them?” Nancy Pelosi confirmed to our international audience on national TV that indeed they where removing the nuclear codes with the help of the CIA and if anyone has any questions they could just call up and ask. What followed only confirms nuclear tensions where about to explode. The redaction is worth at the minimum trillion$ more than all moneys because with nuclear war lights out! Nothing! This simultaneously addressed the other largest nuclear power and all the rest without having to address any of them directly except our own.”

    Is this the full documentary? I feel like it used to be longer, and this one seems to start abruptly. I'm trying to show it to my students, but I'd prefer the full version--can't seem to find anywhere! (I saw the ABC one that was posted last year, but I'm not crazy about it. This one is better in its full version).

    Why is Dennis Banks speaking on Alcatraz occupation? He and the American Indian Movement were not involved

    • @Garrettav8or
      @Garrettav8or 2 роки тому

      Dennis and Clyde, among others, formed AIM in 1968, in response to racism of the police in Minneapolis....the Alcatraz occupation gave more notice to Indian activism, and thus helped propel the cause of AIM and others. John Trudell was AIM spokesman thru most of the 70s......so I believe Dennis was interviewed, as he was an activist at that time, and it acknowledges the movement of all Indian activist groups. That's what I got out of it.

      Dennis banks Clyde Bellecourt Russell Means were the co-founder of the American Indian movement And participate in 1968 and 1969 on Alcatraz. And from 1969 to 1971 John Trudell and Richard Oakes and many more on Alcatraz were spoke speakers for A.I.M. .. Aim should have been protesting for better laws by keeping our children safe. And for the forests of our wildlife creature and farmlands where the horses the cows and the chickens live. everything gone made by cement and concrete. Trees are gone so are the blue birds. . have no room not even for vegetables and fruits to grow. Especially in California. Sad how beautiful once was this country was. Now it nothing not broken down buildings full of trash trash trash. No more fresh water. Not even to drink. Soon America will have a food shortage. And will be gone. None of our animals will survive when they're surrounded by cities made with cement and concrete. Without trees.or grass to eat. Or to let wild horses run free.. nothing but in cages. Sad country our Native land once our ancestors was very proud of the land that were free to ride on wild. horses. Instead taking oil from the land.

    Shameful the way these indigenous people were removed, displaced and robbed of their identity.promises and pledges made by so called civilised governments completely dishonoured.greed and capitalism overruled the need to do the right thing. It must be heartbreaking for the Indian tribes to witness the destruction to the environment that they held sacred.
